Volunteer Driver Role Description

Hello and thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer with us.

What we do…

At Volunteer Cornwall we operate a community transport scheme and this is made possible thanks to our group of over 100 volunteer drivers. We help over 4,000 people travel over 1,000,000 miles, a year, taking them to medical, social and educational appointments around Cornwall and occasionally beyond.

Volunteer Driver Role Description

In this vital role to our communities you would use your own vehicle to take up to 3 passengers at any time, to a range of different appointments and activities within Cornwall. You will be working with children and adults whom some may be considered at risk of harm so a firm commitment to safeguarding is essential. You will need to agree to an enhanced DBS check for Adults & Children with a request for a check against the barred lists. We also require you to provide two references as part of the Safer Recruitment process, these do not have to be a previous employer but we can not accept reference from family members.

A responsible attitude is vital along with a good driving record (if you have points please let us know on your application and we can have a chat during your interview as to the circumstances around them). Your vehicle should be clean and presentable at all times, fully insured (with a MOT where applicable), road legal and well maintained.

You will receive mileage expenses based on the mileage that you travel from and back to your home at 45p per mile.

Location

The volunteering can take place across Cornwall and beyond but you can specify how far and when you are prepared to drive.

Volunteer Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Available for our transport team to contact you with journeys
  • Being prompt and on time for all pick-ups and drop offs
  • Being courteous, friendly and professional at all times
  • Having a conversation and listening to passenger stories.
  • Contacting Volunteer Cornwall if you have any questions or concerns.
  • Letting Volunteer Cornwall know, as soon as possible, if you can no longer undertake a journey
  • Feeding back any Safeguarding concerns to us as soon as possible.
  • Cash handling with passengers that pay for their own journey (you can opt out of these if you wish).
  • Completing accurate expense claims, submitted on a regular basis. Assistance is available if required.

Time Commitment

This is a fully flexible role supporting a wide range of passenger journeys.  We provide journeys 7 days a week. But if you have limited availability please let us know on the application form. We do not charge you for any of the training or the DBS check, but due to the cost to us we would ask that you volunteer for a minimum length of 6 months.
