Introducing "Gleaning"

Cornwall's new Gleaning Network is looking for kind souls to help harvest vegetables and the occasional excess of fruit, in fields across the county. This involves gathering in fields, usually given knives and crates and cutting cabbages, broccoli, courgettes, sprouts etc or sorting potatoes, that would otherwise go to waste. Many farmers overproduce to ensure they have enough to keep the supermarkets happy or have a glut as the weather has been good. We also need strong folk with access to a van to then help us distribute the produce to local food banks, community larders and meals on wheels etc. All volunteers will be paid for transport costs, equipment is provided. You would be fully insured and may even get the occasional cauliflower in way of thanks! (-: Finally we need drivers available to occasionally pick up from packing houses or a farm gate and deliver smaller quantities of produce locally. As there are often knives involved we only allow children of secondary school age and above to attend, so long as they are accompanied by a suitable adult.
