Viva Friendship Clubs We run an exciting and varied programme of clubs and activities for people with learning disabilities, ASD and Asperger’s – and if there’s something we don’t offer but you’d be interested in, please contact us and we’ll see what we can do! Our Current Clubs Give it a Go Club Our exciting taster club is almost at an end – a group for people with ASD in Falmouth. Over the past few weeks, members have tried writing poems, manga drawing, papercraft, board games and lots of other opportunities. Still to come – drama skills and music! All Write! Our monthly writing group welcomes writers of any level of experience who have ASD or Asperger’s. Meetings are on the first Thursday of the month at the Pearl Centre in Truro. Bring along either a laptop or pen and paper – whatever works best for you – and your imagination, as we do writing exercises and give feedback on each other’s work. August’s project is writing inspired by song lyrics. F3 (Food, Fun & Friends) Clubs Food, fun and friends in huge amounts! Our cookery clubs get together once a fortnight to cook a delicious meal, lay the tables and eat together before tackling the washing up. And when we’re not doing that, we’re helping out at Blue Light Day, Party in the Park, Big Beach Day and anywhere else we’re asked. We run sessions in Liskeard, Redruth, Truro and Kehelland near Camborne although some groups are currently fully subscribed. Our Truro and Redruth groups are run by Sanjay Kumar, a community chef from the School of Cornish Sardines http://schoolofcornishsardines.co.uk Anyone can get involved in F3, and we’re always happy to take suggestions for what to cook next. Our F3 clubs are currently on a summer break but if you’d like to get involved in September, we’d love to hear from you! Flashlights Disco We run a quarterly event in Falmouth for adults with additional needs. We always have DJs, dancing and pasties, but other events vary – we’ve had Zumba sessions, individual singers and a choir so far. Eyra Matching Agency are always in attendance, and guest DJs are welcome. The next Flashlights event is planned for around Halloween and will feature face painting, fancy dress and spooky music…Further details and a poster will be available nearer the time. Viva on the Road Viva clients have plenty of opportunities to get involved in local community events. This summer, we’ve helped advertise and host Cornwall Youth Orchestra’s concert at Truro Cathedral, serve food and drinks to the runners at the ROC 5K and we’re looking forward to the Big Beach Day on September 8th. Past Clubs Looking back over some of the amazing work done by our groups… Frames of Mind - Introduction to Animation In Spring 2016, we ran the very successful ‘Frames of Mind’ club with animator and artist Johanna Roehr http://johannaroehr.com/ 6 people with autism learnt a variety of techniques and styles of animating, and were supported in putting together short films related to Autism. Some of these were later shown in the ‘Acoustic Animate’ exhibition in Falmouth, curated and organised by photographer Lauren Reid, along with a selection of photographs showing the creative process. We’re hoping to run Frames of Mind again this autumn. Music Wings - Introduction to Music Production For songwriters, musicians and anyone who likes creating sound and playing with computers, our Introduction to Music Production is the club for you! Run by musician and DJ Nell Sanders, members create their own piece of music from scratch, including creating instrument tracks, special effects and voice recording. We’re planning to run a third session of Music Wings in Spring 2017. Introduction to DJing Viva came full circle when former Viva client Ben Wilson, also known as DJ Copycat, delivered a 6 week introduction to DJ-ing course in Redruth earlier this year. Working with a mix of different musical styles, a small group learnt how to design sets, fade songs in and out and use different pieces of equipment. As DJ-ing was so popular, we’re hoping to run it again later this year. Our Partner Organisations We work with some amazing organisations to deliver a wider range of activities and provision for people with additional needs across Cornwall, including: Cornwall Special Olympics We work closely with Cornwall Special Olympics to provide sporting opportunities across Cornwall.
