There are lots of uniformed youth services across Cornwall - Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts, St John Ambulance as well as Air, Sea, Army, Police and Fire Cadets. All of them have one thing in common - they all require adult volunteers in order to function.

As this article from the BBC news website shows, finding enough volunteers is not an easy task. So we have made the month of May our 'Uniformed Youth' volunteering month and we would like you to consider getting involved.

Andy Brelsford joined BBC Radio Cornwall's Debbie McCrory on 4th May 2017 to talk about Uniformed Youth volunteering. Tune in to the broadcast to listen to the interview (the interview starts 36 minutes into the radio broadcast).

Common myths:

1. They wont want me because I haven't served in the armed forces or emergency services.

Whilst it is true that many volunteers do have a background of service, many do not and in most instances, it isn't a bar to getting involved.

2. I haven't got children attending my local uniformed youth group.

You don't have to have children attending a local unit in order to become a volunteer there.

3. There is too much bureaucracy involved in registering.

For obvious reasons, background checks are necessary but these needn't be onerous. DBS (formerly CRB) checks are required for those working with children and young people but since the introduction of online checking and the update service, this can be done quickly and can be done just the once.

And if you still haven't made your mind up, here are a couple of articles - this article from someone who has done it herself may help persuade you or this one from a new Scout leader

You can find details of opportunities to get involved near you in several ways:

1. Look on the do-it website - search by postcode

2. Contact your local unit directly

3. Look on the internet for websites for Scouts, Guides, Cadets etc and make an enquiry.

If in doubt, give us a call here at Volunteer Cornwall on 01872 266988 or email [email protected]

Or, use the same contact details, if you are a cadet or uniformed youth organisation looking for volunteers.
