Transform Ageing is a pioneering programme taking a design-led approach to improving people’s experience of ageing. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, this new cross-sector initiative is about bringing together people in later life, social entrepreneurs and health and social care leaders to define, develop and deliver new solutions that better support the needs and aspirations of our ageing communities.
By placing people in later life at the heart of the design process, the programme aims to actively engage their insight, thereby increasing their influence and support to deliver solutions which will better meet their needs. In turn, Transform Ageing will support commissioners to feel more confident in incorporating new services and interventions into mainstream care supply chains and social entrepreneurs to scale their effective solutions more sustainably.
Here's a video which explains what Transform Ageing has been doing since launch and what happens next.

Transform Ageing ensures that we find the best innovations to change the lives of people in later life and that they reach them as quickly as possible.
- We enable people in later life and their support network to feel able to contribute to how and what services are commissioned in their community.
- We bring together people in later life and social entrepreneurs with ideas to transform ageing.
- We back high potential social ventures from across the country at start up and scale up, offering a comprehensive package of funding and support.
- We work with local healthcare commissioners to drive adoption and create impact.
- We will convene a national network of supporters to contribute to and learn from our work.
The programme is being delivered through a partnership led by Design Council, alongside UnLtd (the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs), the South West Academic Health Science Network (SWAHSN) and the Centre for Ageing Better. The local element is provided by Volunteer Cornwall as the delivery organisation and was launched back in April.
The programme initially convened people in later life and their friends and families, with health and social care leaders and social entrepreneurs in Cornwall in a series of workshops to address the 'Exploring the Challenge' phase in the Summer of 2017.
The bids will then be presented to an awards panel consisting of: a person in later life, a health/social care commissioner, the Awards Manager from Unltd and a member from the Delivery Organisation. This will take place towards the end of January 2018.
We have worked closely with communities in Cornwall, North Devon, Somerset and Torbay to understand what people need and want, what would improve their experience of ageing and what would make a difference to their day-to-day lives.
Recognising that those with first-hand experience provide unique insight, we brought together groups of people in later life, their friends, families and carers, social entrepreneurs and public-sector leaders in each of the four locations and worked with them collaboratively on their selected ageing challenge.
This research and insight has led to the development of six innovation briefs:
- Steps to a positive future
- Mobility and transport
- Life transitions
- Caring about carers
- Right information, right time
- Making connections
A number of social entrepreneurs have already successfully responded to the innovation challenge and through Transform Ageing will now receive funding and support to deliver lasting social impact in the region. To view the full list of awardees, click on the link below:
