The Corporate Volunteering Officer works with a variety of local employers to promote and facilitate employer supported volunteering. Within that work we have formed a partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support.
People living with and affected by cancer can be referred via their healthcare professionals. Working with Cornwall Council and other local business partners, employees spend a day working out of the office to provide support.
The project began with patients identifying things like gardening or painting and decorating as tasks they were finding harder and harder to tackle. Living with cancer has a huge impact which can include affecting mobility and energy levels, and seeing flower beds weed over or hedges get overgrown becomes frustrating and distressing.
By engaging in the project, an employer invests in its staff by allowing them out to volunteer and supports Macmillan at the same time. The employee volunteers spend a day gardening or doing simple DIY tasks; doing the weeding or hedge trimming, mowing the lawn or pruning, digging out the old and planting the new. A day of practical help and support to get things more manageable has a big impact on the wellbeing of both volunteers and the patients.
