Our Community Transport Scheme serves anyone who has difficulty in getting around. Our team of transport co-ordinators will match you with a local driver and will arrange for them to pick you up in good time.

Our Drivers

Our volunteer drivers come from all walks of life but are united by their wish to help their communities. All of our drivers are checked with the Disclosure and Barring Service so we can be sure that they are suitable to help even the most vulnerable of us. They are all trained, by us, in proper driving with passengers and their driving standards are regularly assessed. Lastly, all our volunteers regularly undergo ‘Safeguarding’ training to ensure that they know what to do if they have concerns for the wellbeing of anyone they drive.

It is a measure of the quality of the training our drivers receive that we regularly are asked to train other organisations’ drivers both in driving and in Safeguarding. You can find details of upcoming Safeguarding dates on our Training Courses page.

Can I use the Service?

In short, Yes. Our Community Car Scheme has no limits on who may use the service.  Obviously the time of our volunteers is a valuable resource and we try to make sure that we help those in most need of help first. If you cannot drive, or cannot use public transport we will always try to find a volunteer willing to help you.

How much does it cost?

Our volunteers are reimbursed for their mileage at a rate of 42p per mile and we include a £2 administration charge for our work in arranging the travel and managing our large group of drivers. It is important to remember that the mileage rate includes the distance for the driver to come to pick you up, and then to go home again afterwards but we will always try to find the closest available driver to you to keep costs down and we will be happy to provide you with a likely cost when you arrange your transport.

How do I book?

It couldn’t be easier to book transport with our volunteers. Simply call 01872 265300, or email bookings@volunteercornwall.org.uk and tell us about your requirements. Alternatively click on the 'Book Transport' option from the Transport menu. We tend to work about 24-48 hours in advance but will always try to accommodate you if you have to give us less notice. It is always helpful in finding a suitable volunteer if you are able to be a little bit flexible about the time that you travel, but we understand that appointments are often not negotiable.
