On Thursday 23rd Newquay, we gathered at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay for the 2017 Cornwall Celebrates Volunteering Awards.

This is the 9th year we have held such an event and once again we were delighted to be joined by The Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Col Edward Bolitho OBE, to present the awards and BBC Radio Cornwall's Daphne Skinnard, our MC for the day.

For each category, there were three shortlisted finalists and none of them knows whether they have won until the envelope is opened and the names are read out so the shock and surprise on their faces is genuine.

Finally, we look at all the category winners and select an overall Volunteer of the Year, sponsored by our hosts, the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay. This is always the toughest part of the selection process and this year the panel awarded that accolade to Deb Rosser for her environmental work which has had a national as well as local impact.

Of course in our eyes, every volunteer deserves recognition and whilst we cant give certificates to all 140,000 of Cornwall's volunteers, we can shine a light on their outstanding work through events like this.
