What does this course entail?

This half-day course is designed to give learners a basic understanding of the principles of risk assessment.

Who would benefit from this course?

It is intended for:

  • those working in any role which has a requirement to fulfil basic risk assessments
  • those workers who may be asked to contribute to the risk assessment process
  • all staff and volunteers who will be expected to act to protect their own health and safety and that of others.

No formal qualifications are necessary but it will be important to have a reasonable standard of English.

What does the course cover?

The course will enable learners to understand:

  1. the legal requirements for risk assessment.
  2. the principles of risk assessment including:
    • hazards, risks and control measures
    • the five steps of risk assessment
    • the hierarchy of control
    • risk assessment review and record keeping
How is the course assessed?

Group discussions and various activities / exercises form the basis of the assessment. On completion of this non-accredited course, an in-house certificate of attendance and participation will be issued.

What are the opportunities for progression?

This course is useful for progressing on to a more detailed Level 2 in Principles of Risk Assessment, with further progression to the Level 3. This course is a useful addition to CPD for anyone who manages volunteers or organises events.
