Cornwall's Health Heroes

Volunteer Cornwall has, for some time, been working closely with colleagues across health & social care to find ways of making the system work better in Cornwall.

We believe that people have a role to play in taking care not only of their own health and well being but that of others around them in their community. And every day in Cornwall, tens of thousands of people do just that by volunteering their time in a range of roles for hundreds of different charities and community groups.

Over the coming months, we will be launching a new campaign to get more people to join this growing army but right now we are expanding our own range of services, extending the help we offer to an even wider range of people.

That means we are on the look-out for more volunteers. We need people of any age, skills or experience in all parts of the county and it doesn't matter how much or little time you have available - if you enjoy helping others then we want to hear from you.

The document below outlines our current projects and services to give you an idea of the kind of things we do but we are also planning to launch new services soon and we also want to hear from people who might be interested in any of the following:

  • Supporting your local GP Practice to help tackle loneliness and isolation
  • Driving elderly or vulnerable people to / from hospital or health appointments
  • Providing a "good neighbours" service to people in the town or village where you live
  • Setting up an activity or social group in your neighbourhood (with support from a professional)
  • Supporting or befriending people who have had a stroke

Transform Ageing - Calls for Applications

Transform Ageing brings together people in later life, social entrepreneurs and public sector leaders to examine the challenges experienced by ageing communities in the South West. It aims to deliver product and service solutions to meet those needs, across the three years of the programme. The programme is funded by Big Lottery Fund's Accelerating Ideas programme, and delivered in the South West by Design Council, in partnership with other organisations. We are the local partner for Cornwall.

We are inviting applications from social entrepreneurs who have ideas which could tackle the challenges of ageing, innovative product and service design, and our application categories are:

  1. Steps for a positive future - People in later life have positive experiences of ageing
  2. Mobility and transport - Enhancing independence and wellbeing through improved mobility
  3. Life Transitions - Supporting people to prepare for life changes
  4. Caring about Carers - Supporting, valuing and celebrating carers
  5. Right information, right time - Making information accessible, relevant and meaningful
  6. Making Connections - Creating opportunities for people in later life to connect with other people, communities and activities.

For more information, and the specific details of the project, please download the information booklet.

A pot of £822,500 is available and awardees will receive a package of both financial and non-financial support, tailored to the needs of their project.

Awards are given under different categories, depending on the stage and scale of the project - £5,000, up to £15,000 and over £25,000.

Community Migration Stories

In March 2018, the National Maritime Museum Cornwall will be opening their new major temporary exhibition, Titanic Stories (title TBC). A fundamental theme of the Titanic story is that of migration, of people boarding the liner in search of a new life in America.

As part of the exhibition, the museum would like to gather and present contemporary stories from the community and have partnered with Storylines CIC (www.storylines.org.uk) to collect and record stories and experiences of people that have moved to Cornwall from overseas.

The museum are currently looking for people who have migrated to Cornwall from overseas and would like to share their story with the project.

If people would like to learn more about the project and/or get involved, then they would love to hear from them on-
