Help Develop Women's Supporst Services

The Women’s Centre Cornwall is working with the other Rape Crisis Centres in the South West to establish the extent of sexual violence experienced by women aged 55years and over; this important project is being funded by Comic Relief and the information gained will contribute to developing services both locally and nationally.  Critically the project will  give women over 55years old the opportunity to contribute to the development of relevant support services that address their specific needs.

The British Crime Survey shows that 1 in 5 women experience sexual violence at some time in their life. Across the South West around an estimated 176,000 women over the age of 55 will be a survivor of rape, sexual assault or sexual abuse. However all the Women’s Centres and  Rape Crisis Centres in the South West recognise that only a small % of women over 55 are asking for any support. We therefore want to reach out to these women to enable them to get the support that is right for them.

A key part of the project is hearing from women across the regions about their experiences and what type of support would work for them. We have therefore developed a short anonymous survey about their experiences of sexual harassment, sexual violence/abuse and about what barriers are there to getting support and what support they need and would work for them.

The survey can be accessed from The Women’s Centre Cornwall website https://www.womenscentrecornwall.org.uk/by any woman wishing to respond.
